Intro MarriageReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The issue of gay marriage returned to the statehouse today. The House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing into a bill that would ban same-sex marriage, and define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The bill has already passed the state Senate, and as Richard Ager reports, it has become one of the most divisive issues debated this year. |
Marriage DebateReturn to index of stories... |
Supporters and opponents of gay marriage came to the statehouse to have their say on the proposed legislation. Throughout NH, gays and lesbians are our neighbors, sons and daughters.based on their committments to one another? Track: As you would expect in a debate about laws governing personal relationships, this hearing was an emotional affair, with deeply felt beliefs expressed by all. God speaks clearly about homosexuality in the old testament.mentioned in the Bible and the Declaration of Independence. The sponsors of the bill say they wrote it to close a loophole in NH law which allows for recognition of legal marriages performed out of state. The recent court decision in Massachusetts to allow same-sex marriage starting next month raised the possibility of New Hampshire having to recognize those marriages. If there is a loophole, and I actually think there isn't.claim marriage contrary to NH law.then polygamy would be legal because it isn't even confined to the United States. Track: Some opponents of the bill say it is not only unncessary, it also sends the wrong message about NH. Having spent 10 years in the army as a paratrooper.uncomfortable with your sexual orientation. Human love is between a man and a woman and it's natural fulfillment.procreation of children. Bishop John McCormack spoke in favor of the bill and took questions from the committee. I would like to know how you feel about the doctrine of the separation of church and state. And if you believe our laws should be based on that doctrine, and not on faith - anyone's particular faith.and promote their values. I was raised in the New Testament and I want to point out to you that Jesus never said a single word against homosexuality, one single word. He did ask us to treat our brothers and sisters as we would like to be treated ourselves. But McCormack's message may have been blunted by this testimony from a church member. When two parents went to Bishop McCormick to complain that three of their six sons had been abused by a priest, he told them to be good Catholics and be quiet about it. But I'm here to say this good Catholic will not be quiet about injustice. Bishop McCormack has presented himself as a moral leader, but I ask you to consider his deplorable record when you consider his testimony today. The House Judiciary Committee will vote on a recommendation on April 20th, and send the bill to the full House. For NH Outlook, I'm Richard Ager. |
Intro PrescriptionReturn to index of stories... |
Another issue of hot debate: Prescription drugs. New Hampshire has joined 3 other states, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin in offering it's citizens a web link to a Canadian internet pharmacy. The governor unveiled the web page this week against the advice of the federal government. Governor Benson says it's a safe and cheaper alternative for some purchasers. Critics says the site is illegal and can prove dangerous. Phil Vaughn picks up on the story. |
Prescription DrugsReturn to index of stories... |
High prescription drug prices are keeping some people from taking them, says Governor Benson. So on Monday, the state launched a web page. It provides a direct link to cheaper Canadian drugs. Governor Craig Benson - "We have taken great care.for people who need them." The Food and Drug Administration opposes the initiative. In a letter to Governor Benson they state: In February, Governor Benson ordered six prescription drugs from the Canadian pharmacy now linked to the state's web page. He had them tested. The results showed they contained the same medications as drugs bought in local pharmacies. Again, the FDA dismissed his findings as inconclusive. Benson - "I know there are critics of the data.does not challenge my data." Robert Woodward is a professor of health economics at the University of NH. The governor's efforts, he says, are helpful. "I think it's a good idea." Charlie Arlinghaus/Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy: "The people at the state ask.misleading." Charlie Arlinghaus is president of the Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy. Like the FDA, he has safety concerns with internet drug purchases. "The big difference is if you walk into a store in Montreal." This is how the governor responded when asked about the legal responsibilites the state bears with publishing the web page. Benson: "We are satisfied." Some US pharmacuetical companies have hinted that they'll limit some drugs to Canada. That, says Woodward should be a concern. Woodward: "Then the question becomes." Arlinghaus: "What we need to do." For NH Outlook, I'm Phil Vaughn. |
Intro NH JobsReturn to index of stories... |
A state program mirrors that work -- and even extends the service to high-school graduates as well. "NH First Job" was created to stop the outward migration of high school and college grads to other states - and to promote opportunities within New Hampshire. The non-profit organization helps students --find their first job. Success stories are captured on a new film called "Insights into Industry". |
NHFirstJobsReturn to index of stories... |
OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO MAKE GRADUATES, HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE AND TECHNICAL SCHOOL GRADUATE AS WEAR OF JOB OPPORTUNITIES, CARREER TRACK, ENTRY LEVEL JOBS IN THE STATE TO THAT STUDENTS DON'T THINK THAT THEY HAVE TO GO OUT OF STATE TO WORK. AND IN TERMS OF THE AWARENESS THAT'S OUR GOAL. WE HAVE ASSISTED STUDENTS LOOK FOR JOBS AND OBTAIN JOBS IN THE STATE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND IN TERMS OF MAKE STUDENT WEARS OF JOBS AS THEY GO ON TO POST-SECONDARY OATH INDICATION THEY HAVE THE AWARENESS OF COMPANIES HERE AND HAVE SAID TO THEMSELVES WE CAN COME BACK. THERE ARE JOBS HERE IN THE STATE. DO YOU HEAR BACK FROM STUDENTS WHO UTILIZE THE PROGRAM? THERE'S ONE STUDENT THAT MY ONE OF MY BOARD MEMBERS WHO CREATED THE PROGRAM DOES SITE OVER AND OVER AGAIN WHO USED ONE OF OUR VIEW BOOK NOW CALLED THE BIG RED JOB BOOK TO LOOK FOR INTERNSHIPS EVERY SUMMER AT THREE DIFFERENT BUSINESSES AND WHEN HE DID GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE HE APPLIED TOR A JOB AT EACH AND EACH BUSINESS OFFERED HIM A JOB. GREAT. ACCORDING TO THE LITERATURE ALMOST 50% OF COLLEGE GRADUATES DID NOT EXPECT TO WORK IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. DOES THAT SURPRISE YOU? WELL, A ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMPANY BE RILS WHEN THEY BE BAN THE PROGRAM IN THE COUNTY SAND HAD AND SINCE THEN THE BUSINESS AND ASSOCIATION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE AND THE NAM HIGHER EDUCATION HAVE DONE STUDIES AND REALIZED THIS ISSUE AND LOOKED AT IT AS AN ISSUE THEY'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO TACKLING. AND CHANGES. AND CHANGES. PAM, BROWN, OATH ONE AND TEN COLLEGES THOUGHT NEW HAMPSHIRE HAD GOOD OPPORTUNITIES. I DID HEAR A LOT ABOUT EVERYBODY ALWAYS SAID DOWN SOUTH THERE'S MORE JOBS AND WHEN I FIRST STARTED AT WENTWORTH HOSPITAL THREE YEARS AGO I HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS IN STORE FOR ME. I STARTED THERE I FIGURED I DON'T REALLY WANT TO WORK IN THE HOSPITAL, I JUST NEED A JOB AND WHEN I STARTED THERE I GOT TALKING TO THE NURSES AND ONE OF THE CNAs PULLED ME INTO A ROOM AND SAID, BECAUSE I WAS TALKING ABOUT A TAKE CLASSES IN NURSING AND FELT LIKE I COULDN'T DO IT. I FELT I WASN'T SMART ENOUGH AND SHE PULLED ME IN AND SAID PAM I BELIEVE YOU ARE. I WATCH YOU OUT AT THAT DESK AND I SEE HOW GREAT YOU ARE AT YOUR JOB. MAKE THAT CALL, PUT THAT CLASS ON YOUR VISA CARD AND GO FOR IT AND I DID. SO YOU'RE GOAL IS TO BECOME A NURSE. YOU WERE ALSO FEATURED IN THE FILM WE JUST SAW. WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU WANT TO GET ACROSS TO OTHERS LIKE YOURSELF THAT WENT THROUGH THE SAME THOUGHT PROCESS I CAN'T DO THIS. EXACTLY. JUST. EVERY DAY I'M STILL GOING THROUGH THAT, TAKING CLASSES AND I'M LIKE CAN I DO THIS? CAN I PASS THAT EXAM? AND HONESTLY EVERY DAY AMAZE MYSELF AND IT'S YOU SHOULDN'T FEEL LIKE YOU'RE NOT SMART ENOUGH OR YOU CAN'T DO IT. IF YOU TRY YOU'LL REALIZE YOU CAN DO A LOT MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOUR CAPABLE OF. SO FRANCOISE I I KNOW YOU THINK OF PER AS A SUCCESS STORY. YOU SOME TALK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES IN THE FILM. BUT YOU HAVE A WEBSITE AND THE BIG RED JOB BOOK AND HERE IT IS HERE, IT'S QUITE IMPRESSIVE WHAT'S IN HERE. WHAT WOULD YOU FIND FLIPPING THROUGH THE PAGES. IT'S A FREE JOB SEARCH MAGAZINE THAT WE GIVE OUT FREE OF CHARGE TO GRADUATES AND THIS MAGAZINE PROFILES COMPANIES ALL OVER NEW HAMPSHIRE. WHAT THEY DO THE ENTRY LEVEL JOBS, BENEFITS AND THE CONTACT INFORMATION. WE HOPE THIS WILL EDGE KALT STUDENTS ON BUSINESSES IN THE STATE SIMILAR TO WHEN THE MILL TAR GOES INTO A SCHOOL OR COLLEGES THEY LEAVE BEHIND A CATALOG. THIS IS WHAT PROGRAMS WE HAVE TO OFFER AND THAT'S HOW WE AFORMULATE OUR PROGRAM TO HELP STUDENTS IDENTIFY COMPANIES THAT HAVE JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE WHETHER THEY WANT A JOB AFTER HIGH SCHOOL OR WHETHER THEY GO OUT--GO TO SCHOOL AND ARE SEEKING JOB OPPORTUNITIES AFTER GRADUATION. HAS THIS BEEN AN EASY SELL WITH BUSINESSES. DO THEY WANT TO JUMP ON THE BANDS WAGON. THE GROWTH INDUSTRIES DEFINITELY DO. THERE ARE PROFILES IN THE MOVIE AND WE HAVE 50 BUSINESSES PROFILED IN THE BIG RED JOB BOOK. AND LET ME SAY THAT, WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO IS THE COMPANY THAT'S HAVE OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL ASICHT THEIR ENTRY LEAVE WORKERS, GAIN ADVANCEMENT AND BETTER PAY AND A LOT OF THE COMPANIES WE WORK WITH HAVE ON THE JOB TRAINING, APRESENT SHIP PERHAPS, MANAGEMENT, AND PROGRAMS TO HELP THEY'RE EMPLOYEES GET AHEAD. THAT'S UNTOLD. WHAT FEEDBACK ARE YOU GETTING FROM PARTICIPATING BUSINESSES WITH THIS PROGRAM IN AEEKT? THEY'RE CONCERNED WITH GETTING THEIR NFGTS TO THE SCHOOLS. INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR JOBS AND TRAINING PROGRAMS WITH JOBS THAT THEY HAVE AVAILABLE OR THEY'LL HAVE AVAILABLE IN THE FUTURE DO YOU TO GROWTH AND RIRPT THE THEIR WORK FORCE. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HOSPITAL'S EXPEERNLS WITH THE PROGRAM. HAVE THEY BEEN PLEASED? I ACTUALLY WILL JUST HEARD ABOUT IT MYSELF WHEN I WAS ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE VIDEO AND I KNOW THAT WHEN I'M WENT INTO THE HUMAN RESOURCES AND SAT DOWN TO DO DUE THE INTERVIEW EVERYBODY HAD GREAT THINGS TO SAY IN THERE AND I DEFINITELY THINK THAT WENTWORTH DOUGLAS WILL BENEFIT FROM NAM'S FIRST JOBS. WOULD THIS HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE TO YOU IF YOU HAD IN INFORMATION WHEN YOU WERE LOOKING FOR A JOB? DEFINITELY. I HONESTLY FELT ONCE--WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL OUR MY FRIENDS WERE GOING TO HAVE BIG UNIVERSE 'TIS AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHEY WANTED TO DO YET. SO WHEN I GRADUATED I WAS KIND OF I FELT LOST LIKE ALL RIGHT WHERE DO I WORK, WHAT DO I DO AND IF I DID KNOW ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE'S FIRST JOBS I WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE BENEFITED FROM IT BUT. THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO ANOTHER ONE OF THE PROFILES IN THE FILM WHICH IS AN INSPIRATION. WHEN I STARTED WORKING HERE IT WAS LIKE A 25TH OF THE SIZE IT'S NOW AND EVERY DAY THEY'RE ADDING NEW PEOPLE AND OPENING KNEW STORES. THE ENVIRONMENT IS VERY FRIENDLY. I FEEL LIKE I'M INFORMED ALL THE TIME OF WHAT'S GOING ON AND THEY LIKE TO TAKE CARE OF EMPLOYEES. ONCE A YEAR WE HAVE A DAY THE WHOLE COMPANY TAKES OFF AND THEY USUALLY PROVIDE WITH LUNCH AND ENTERTAINMENT AND WE HAVE A TALK ABOUT THE COMPANY ITSELF AND HOW IT'S GROWING AND JAY JILL HAS EXCELLENT BENEFITS. THEY TALK ABOUT THE BENEFITS. FRANCOISE HOW DOES IT WORK? YOU GO INTO THE SCHOOL AND PREBTED THE PROGRAM? THE SCHOOLS NEED TO INVITE US IN SO SO I WOULD ASK ANYBODY LISTENING TO THE SHOW GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, PRINCIPALS TO INVITE US IN TO GIVE APE PRESENTATION WE'LL BRING THE BIG RED JOB BOOK IN AND GIVE EACH STUDENT A COPY. WE HAVE A WEBSITE WHERE COMPANIES CAN POST JOBS FREE OF CHARGE, FULL TIME, PART-TIME AND SEASONAL TOO AND STUDENTS CAN POST THEIR RESUMES FREE. THAT IS GREAT. YES. AND AS WE GET READY TO CLOSE OUT ANY PARTING WORDS YOU WANTS TO GIVE SO SOMEONE LIKE YOURSELF THAT'S SOON GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR THEIR FIRST JOB. I WOULD SAY DON'T GIVE UP BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE NOT THE BIG COLLEGE UNIVERSITY TYPE. THERE'S HOPE OUT THERE FOR YOU YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND PUT YOUR ALL INTO WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO. AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NAM FIRST JOB AND THE ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES IT PROVIDES PU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. |

Holmes FuneralReturn to index of stories... |
Finally -- We remember Sgt Jeremiah "Jay" Holmes.and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country. Holmes was laid to rest today at St Mary New Cemetery in Dover. Killed 10 days ago in a truck explosion in Iraq -- Holmes was only 27. He'd been in Iraq less than a month. Sgt Holmes is the first New Hampshire Army National Guardsmen killed in Iraq -- assigned to the 744th Transportation Company out of Somersworth. He spent much of his youth in Dover, and later moved to South Berwick Maine. He knew his wife Kim since childhood --and only recently became a Dad. His son Kaleb marked his first birthday this week. Family, friends, and fellow soldiers came to pay their respect. and to remember.a good friend, a devoted husband, and a dedicated soldier. |
